🐴 Saddle Fitting & Sizing

1. How do I know what size saddle I need?

Your seat size comes down to your height, leg length, and what feels comfortable to you, while the tree size is all about your horse’s back width and wither shape. Take a look at our sizing guide or drop us your measurements—we’re always happy to help you narrow it down.

2. How do I measure my horse’s back for a saddle?

Grab a flexible curve or wire and shape it over your horse’s withers, about two inches behind the shoulder blade. Trace that outline onto paper, snap a photo of it alongside a picture of your horse standing flat, and send it over to us.

3. What is an adjustable gullet system?

It’s a design that lets you swap out internal metal bars to change the tree width (from Narrow to Extra-Wide). It’s ideal for young horses, changing fitness levels, or seasonal weight shifts.

4. What is the difference between wool-flocked and foam panels?

Wool panels are traditional and can be repacked or adjusted by a saddler as your horse’s topline changes. Foam panels offer a close-contact feel with zero maintenance, but they keep their manufactured shape permanently.

5. How can I tell if a saddle is pinching my horse’s shoulders?

If the tree is too narrow, you’ll usually notice dry spots under the front panels after a sweaty workout, white hairs popping up near the withers, or your horse holding back when asked to step forward.

6. Can one saddle fit multiple horses?

If the horses have similar back shapes, a saddle with an adjustable gullet can often bridge the gap. But if you’re trying to fit both a narrow, high-withered Thoroughbred and a flat-backed Draft cross, one saddle won’t fit both safely.

7. How does a dressage saddle fit differently than a jump saddle?

A dressage saddle sits you deeper with straight flaps to support a long, elegant leg. A jump saddle has a flatter seat and forward-cut flaps so you can shorten your stirrups and stay balanced over fences.

8. What seat size should I look for in a pony saddle?

Pony seats usually run between 14 and 16 inches. The right size depends on the rider’s leg length and weight, as well as how much back length the pony has to support a saddle.

9. My horse has high withers—what should I look for?

Look for saddles built with a high-cut pommel, cut-back tree, or deeper front gussets. These designs create proper clearance above the spine so the saddle doesn’t rest on the withers.

10. What does panel clearance mean?

Clearance refers to the open space (the gullet channel) running down the spine. You should always be able to fit 3 to 4 fingers of clear space above the spine from front to back while mounted.

🛒 Types of Saddles & Inventory

11. What types of saddles do you carry?

We stock Jump, Dressage, General Purpose (GP), Endurance, Western, Pony, and Adjustable Saddles, plus a rotating selection of hand-inspected pre-owned models.

12. What is a General Purpose (GP) saddle best for?

GP saddles are the ultimate all-rounders. They’re built for riders who like to do a bit of everything—from flatwork and hacking out on trails to low jumping.

13. Are your Western saddles tough enough for daily work?

Absolutely. Our Western saddles feature heavy-duty leather, solid trees, and comfortable seats built for long hours in the arena, working cattle, or riding trails.

14. What makes an Endurance saddle different?

Endurance saddles are designed to keep both horse and rider comfortable over long distances. They are lightweight with padded seats and wide panels that spread weight evenly to prevent pressure spots.

15. Do you have saddles for short-backed horses?

Yes, we carry models with compact tree profiles, shorter panels, and upswept rear gussets specifically engineered to avoid pressing past the horse’s 18th rib.

16. Are all your saddles real leather?

Most of our inventory features high-grade, full-grain leather. We also carry select high-quality synthetic models for riders who want low-maintenance, weather-resistant gear.

17. Do you sell synthetic saddles?

Yes! We offer lightweight synthetic saddles that wipe clean with a damp cloth—perfect for everyday training or foul-weather riding.

18. What brands or models do you carry?

We carry trusted global brands alongside our own custom-crafted lines. Check our online catalog or reach out to support for our current stock list.

19. Do saddles come with stirrups and girths?

20. How often do you add new inventory?

We add new and pre-owned saddles to our inventory every week. Joining our newsletter is the fastest way to get notified when fresh stock arrives.

🔍 Pre-Owned & Used Saddles

21. How do you inspect your used saddles?

Every pre-owned saddle goes through a thorough, hands-on check in our shop. We test the tree for internal flex, evaluate the flocking, check the stitching, and inspect every billet strap.

22. Are used saddle trees guaranteed unbroken?

Yes, 100%. We stress-test every tree. If a saddle shows any sign of internal cracking, twisting, or weakness, it never goes on our shelves. Period.

23. How do you grade used saddle conditions?

We rate them as Excellent, Very Good, or Fair based on leather condition, age, and normal cosmetic wear. We always post clear photos showing any scuffs so there are no surprises.

24. Can I return a used saddle if it doesn’t fit?

Yes! Used saddles carry the exact same 14-day trial period as our new saddles, as long as they come back in the condition they left.

25. Do used saddles come with a warranty?

While pre-owned saddles don’t carry original manufacturer leather warranties, every single one is backed by our 100% Structural Safety Guarantee.

26. Why buy used instead of new?

Used saddles give you top-tier craftsmanship and supple, pre-broken-in leather at a significantly lower price point.

27. Where can I find the serial number on a used saddle?

You’ll usually find it stamped on the under-flap or near the billet guards. We log and list serial numbers in every used saddle description.

28. Do you accept trade-ins?

We take select trade-ins depending on tree condition and brand demand. Send us a few clear photos and specs, and we’ll let you know if it’s a good fit for trade credit.

29. Can wool flocking in a used saddle be replaced?

Yes! That’s the beauty of wool. A saddler can easily add, remove, or fully replace the wool to custom-fit your horse’s current back shape.

30. How do you know the billets on a used saddle are safe?

We put every billet under tension and check the attachment stitching. If leather holes are stretched or thread is worn, we replace the billets before listing the saddle.

🛡️ Returns, Warranties & Saddle Care

41. What is your return policy?

You have a 14-day trial period from the day your saddle arrives. As long as it comes back clean, dry, and free of scuffs or horse hair, we’ll issue a full refund (minus shipping).

42. How do I start a return?

Email us at returns@premiumsaddleshop.com with your order number, and we’ll send over an RMA number along with return address details for your region.

43. Who pays for return shipping?

Return shipping is covered by the customer, unless we sent the wrong item or there is a verified defect covered under warranty.

44. What warranty comes with new saddles?

Our new saddles carry a 10-Year Limited Warranty on the saddle tree and a 1-Year Limited Warranty on leatherwork and stitching.

45. What isn’t covered under warranty?

Warranties don’t cover normal cosmetic wear, accidental damage (like a horse rolling in a saddle), dry rot from neglect, or third-party alterations.

46. How do I submit a warranty claim?

Send photos of the issue, the saddle’s serial stamp, and your original order receipt to warranty@premiumsaddleshop.com, and our team will review it.

47. How should I clean my leather saddle?

Wipe off sweat and grit with a damp cloth after riding, clean with glycerine saddle soap, and apply a light leather balm periodically to keep the leather supple.

48. How should I store my saddle?

Store it on a rounded saddle rack in a dry, climate-controlled room. Keep it covered with a breathable fabric saddle cover away from damp concrete floors or direct sunlight.

49. Should I oil a brand-new saddle right away?

A light coat of leather balm helps suppleness, but avoid soaking billets or stitch lines in heavy oil—excessive oil can soften glue bonds and stretch fibers out.

50. How often should I get my saddle fit checked?

We recommend having a saddler check your fit once or twice a year. Horse back muscles naturally change shape with age, workload, and seasonal grazing.
