Ideal Saddles
Expert Bench Insights
From the Team at Premium Saddle Shop
As Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) Qualified Fitters spending our weeks in barns, arenas, and at the workbench across North America, Europe, and Australia, Ideal Saddles holds a special place on our fitting bench. When a horse presents a genuine fitting puzzle—whether that’s a barrel-shaped Native breed, a high-withered sport horse with hollowed shoulder pockets, or a horse with an asymmetrical top-line—Ideal gives us one of the most versatile toolkits in British bench saddlery.
Handcrafted in Walsall, England—the historical heart of traditional saddlery—Ideal pairs classic timber spring tree craftsmanship with an amazingly diverse library of tree shapes and panel designs. If you’re looking for a near-custom fit without the multi-year wait times or four-figure custom price tags, Ideal is almost always near the top of our recommendation list.
Real-World Fitting Case: Resolving Saddle Slippage on a Flat-Backed Native Cross
From Our Yard Logs
Horse: 8-year-old Welsh Cob cross gelding (“Barnaby”)
Challenge: Round, flat back with virtually no wither definition and a wide ribcage. Standard A-frame saddles continually rolled side-to-side or slid forward onto his shoulders during down-transitions.
The Solution: We fitted Barnaby in an Ideal Highland & Cob GP built on a broad, low-profile hoop tree. The open “U”-shaped pommel arch sat neatly around his broad spinal structure rather than pinching the top of his back, while wide-swept wool panels and point-strap girthing kept the saddle locked into place.
Outcome: The hoop tree geometry held the saddle stable and centered without having to over-tighten his girth. Barnaby’s stride opened up through his shoulder right away, and the annoying forward slippage vanished completely.
Core Engineering Features
1. Unrivaled Library of British Wooden Trees
Unlike brands that rely on a single standard tree shell across their entire line, Ideal crafts saddles on dozens of distinct wood-laminated spring trees. From high-head trees built for prominent withers to wide-arch hoop trees engineered for flat backs, Ideal lets us match the underlying tree frame to your horse’s exact skeletal shape.
2. Tailored Wool-Flocked Panels & Custom Cuts
Every Ideal saddle comes packed with 100% natural British wool over open-channel panel housings. This gives an SMS fitter total freedom to adjust, top up, or re-balance the flocking directly at your barn. Ideal also offers specialty panel options—like K-panels, drop panels, and extended rear gussets—to cushion muscular hollows or uneven shoulders.
3. Hand-Selected English Leather & Supple Calfskin
Ideal uses top-grade English hide and full-grain leather paired with soft calfskin overlays across the seat and knee rolls. Cushioned with high-density foam underneath, these saddles offer natural grip, pelvic support, and a surprisingly short break-in period out of the box.
Honest Trade-Offs: What to Consider Before You Buy
-
Fixed Spring Trees (No Quick-Swap Gullet Bars): Ideal saddles are built on traditional wood-and-steel spring trees. While an SMS fitter can widen or narrow the tree width by roughly one size using a specialized bench press, you cannot swap gullet plates yourself in the barn aisle with a screwdriver.
-
Complex Model Variations: Because Ideal offers so many tree, flap, block, and panel variations, choosing the right combination without professional fitting guidance can quickly feel overwhelming.
-
Requires Routine Wool Maintenance: Pure wool flocking compresses naturally over time as your horse works and builds muscle. To keep the saddle balanced and prevent pressure points, plan on having an SMS fitter inspect and adjust the flocking every 6 to 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Ideal saddles manufactured?
Ideal Saddles are 100% designed and bench-crafted in Walsall, England, using genuine British timber spring trees and top-tier European hides.
Can the tree width of an Ideal saddle be adjusted?
Yes. While Ideal saddles don’t use plastic quick-change gullet bars, an SMS qualified fitter using an approved bench tree press can safely widen or narrow an Ideal spring tree by approximately one width size.
What is a “Hoop Tree” and does my horse need one?
A hoop tree features a rounded, upside-down “U”-shaped arch at the pommel rather than an inverted, narrow “V”. It’s engineered specifically for wide, flat-backed, or barrel-shaped horses, letting the saddle drape naturally over broad shoulders and wider ribcages without pinching.
